01/13/1970 Steel Mill, The Matrix Club, San Francisco, CA (A TOP 55 SHOW)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6O66RG6W

Set List: The War Is Over / Lady Walking Down The River / Jeannie I Want To Thank You / America Under Fire / Send That Boy To Jail / The Train Song / Going Down Slow / I Gotta Be Free

Notes: Steel Mill, one of several pre-E Street Bands Bruce formed, featured Danny Federici, Vini Lopez, and Vini Roslin (Robbin Thompson didn't join the band until the band returned to New Jersey the following month). After playing several dates in San Francisco early in 1970, the band records three songs for Bill Graham, who offers them a $1,000 recording contract which the band declines. Two of the three songs are included in this show, "He's Guilty" and "The Train Song"; the third song was "Goin' Back to Georgia." Available on the CD "Live at the Matrix," which uses a soundboard recording as the source.

Notes:
ONE show, with STEEL MILL the sole act on the bill. This was a replacement concert for a cancellation of the musical 'Hair'. The above-mentioned setlist is taken from a circulating soundboard of very good to excellent quality, although end-user quality tends to vary widely due to the fact the material has been in circulation for over 20 years and some circulating copies are many generations downstream. This 6-song, 78-minute segment of audio, long referred to in collector circles as the West End gig, would have to rank as the most misidentified, misdated and cannibalized of all Springsteen recordings. To make matters even messier though, the show's epic 30-minute finale, Garden State Parkway Blues, is sometimes edited into separate segments and assigned fictitious titles such as Mountain Child, I Got A Woman or Sunlight Soldiers. Many LP and CD bootlegs (such as TORN AND FRAYED, THE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN STORY VOL and DEEP DOWN IN THE VAULTS) contain one, two or several of these tracks assigned to a wide variety of incorrect dates/venues. However SUNLIGHT SOLDIERS AT THE WEST END (Rattlesnake) includes the complete audio and merely messes up the correct date/venue. This soundboard tape is very deceptive in that drummer Vinnie Lopez's voice microphone is abnormally dominant in the mix, so much so that it sounds like a co-lead singer (i.e., Robbin Thompson) is interacting with Springsteen throughout the show. However under an extremely close comparison it can be determined that the co-lead vocalist is actually drummer and background vocalist Lopez, with his microphone turned way up in the audio mix. Robbin Thompsons voice is definitely not present. There are three critical clues during the performance that, when combined, powerfully point to the true location and date of this show. Firstly, Bruce's dedication to the West End Fire Department - this signifies a Long Branch or close proximity location. Secondly, the distinct sound of wooden side bleachers being stomped during the final song this signifies its indoors and its a gymnasium (not a theatre or concert hall). Thirdly, Bruce recites the opening line of James Taylors song Sweet Baby James during Garden State Parkway Blues that places the show no sooner than late March, 1970. Consequently this audio can, to a high degree of probability, be identified as coming from this April 24, 1970 show.

Two shows, triple bill, with the bottom-billed STEEL MILL opening for the 2nd billed CACTUS and headliner BLACK SABBATH (fronted by a spooked Ozzy Osbourne, who received death threats before the show). The above-mentioned 7-song, setlist comes from a very recently surfaced excellent audio quality soundboard and represents the complete 76-minute performance from the early show, with no continuity breaks in the audio. This is not Steel Mill at its best, but it does contain the previously uncirculating "Do It Now". The original master tape had the recording date on it and, additionally, there is verifying commentary by Robbin Thompson during the performance. About 8 minutes into "Dancing" the generator power fails for 12 seconds, much to the frustration of Bruce who comments "we must be the Guinea Pigs here tonight". According to an attendee recollection each of the three bands played similar length sets. After the end of the evening Springsteen spent about an hour backstage jamming with Cactus bassist Tim Bogart. There is no circulating audio from the late show.

IT TAKES A LOT TO LAUGH, IT TAKES A TRAIN TO CRY / GOIN’ BACK TO GEORGIA / BO DIDDLEY / JUMBELIAH / CRY TO ME / FAST BLUES SHUFFLE / ZOOM THEME / SLOW BLUES / ONE MORE TRY / ROLL OVER BEETHOVAN – REELIN’ AND ROCKIN’

ONE show, triple bill. This is the first of only 2-ever performances of DR ZOOM & THE SONIC BOOM (the other show was outdoors the following day). Undercard acts for this debut show were SUNNY JIM and GODZILLA (who were a late substitution for CONERSTONE). In reality DR ZOOM was merely a progression of Springsteen’s March 1971 “Friendly Enemies” shows at Sunshine In and his April 1971 “Jam Concerts” at The Upstage. Much of the long-standing confusion about how many Dr Zoom shows were performed stems from the fact that some people count the above-mentioned March-April gigs as Dr Zoom events, while others don’t count them. Technically speaking they weren’t Dr Zoom shows, but they did contain most of the musicians and the same party-like atmosphere.

The members of the DR ZOOM & THE SONIC BOOM were Springsteen, Van Zandt, Dave Sancious, Garry Tallent, Vini Lopez, Southside Johnny – plus: Bobby Williams (percussion), Albee “Albany Al” Tellone (sax, vocals) and Bobby Feigenbaum (sax). There was also a 7-member backing vocal troupe nicknamed “The Zoomettes” (Jeannie Clark, Robin Nash, Connie, Kevin Kavanaugh + 3 others). The MC was Kevin Connair. Danny Gallagher handled the on-stage props. Danny Federici was not involved in the Dr Zoom shows.

The 10-song setlist noted above has been culled from a document (in Bruce’s handwriting – see below) that is probably the song schedule for this debut Dr Zoom gig. The material is clearly identifiable by Bruce’s header of “Sonic Tunes”. Whether or not Bruce made any late changes to this setlist for the actual performance is not known. “Fast Blues Shuffle” may be Bruce’s name for “Last Night In Tulsa” (as also performed at the following day’s Zoom gig). THERE IS NO AUDIO OF THIS DEBUT DR ZOOM SHOW IN CIRCULATION. Collectors should note that the widely circulating boot CD “The Bruce Springsteen Story, Volume 5” (E St) mistakenly lists that audio as being from this Sunshine In gig. However the audio is actually from the following day’s outdoor Dr Zoom performance at Newark State College (see 15/05/71 listing for details).

ONE show, with THE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN BAND (along with a several other un-signed groups) performing as part of
the Guggenheim Memorial Concert Series that took place daily in Damrosch Park during the summer of 1971.
According to the New York Times the headliner and scheduled 8PM show closer on the 23rd was THE RICHARD GOLDMAN BAND,
a classical orchestra noted for its creative use of wind and brass instruments. Bruce and his team were one of several
unnamed-in-print undercard acts, each of who were allocated hour-long performing slots. At one point Bruce can be
heard off mike asking how much more time do we have? The response back is 15 minutes and Bruce times the end of
his show impeccably. The fact that Bruces mid-1971 lineup included horns may have been the reason Tinker got this
particular booking. The trumpet and sax are highly prevalent throughout and the arrangements (likely created by Van Zandt)
are outstanding.
The above-mentioned setlist is taken from a soundboard recording that is available on the CD THE BRUCE SPINGSTEEN STORY,
VOLUME 6 (E Street Records). The bootleg cover implies some Columbia Records/CBS affiliation with the recording
but this is just fantasy artwork. This 60-minute recording has continuity between songs and is almost certainly the
complete BSB show from this afternoon gig. Although this was an outdoor event, Bruce and the band were performing within
the Guggenheim Band Shell. The superb acoustics of that shell, combined with an un-degradated source tape, have resulted
in a truly exceptional concert document. Add to this a tight, highly disciplined and inspired performance by the entire
band and it's easy to see why most rate this Damrosch gig as the finest pre-CBS Springsteen concert currently in existence.
This texture of this performance is more in keeping with the funkiness of Bruce's 1974 Wild & Innocent Tour dates
and early Asbury Jukes shows. It is essential audio in any Springsteen collection.
The 9-member Bruce Springsteen Band at Damrosch Park is the same as the 10-member contingent that performed at
The Sunshine In ten days earlier (see 11/07/71 listing) with the exception that Tinker West is not playing congas it seems Tinker was busy working the soundboard. This show includes some of Bruce's finest early-period songwriting
efforts. There are definitive live performances of Jambalaya and You Mean So Much Tom Me plus two songs
(Im In Love Again and You Dont Leave Me No Choice) that are not available from any other show source. Delores Holmes
delivers the sexy Ronnie Spector-ish lead vocal on these two songs. A Springsteen lead vocal of these two songs has yet to
surface. Bruces searing guitar work during You Dont Leave Me No Choice is among his all time best.

SWEET MISS SALLY (9:15) / SHES LEAVING (9:38 ) / KEY TO THE HIGHWAY (6:54) / SURE CAN FEEL THE PAIN (14:09)

ONE show with The Bruce Springsteen Band the lone act on the bill. A typical performance at The Student Prince consisted of three or four 40-minute sets with healthy breaks in between. The above-mentioned partial setlist is taken from a circulating 40-minute audience recording of only fair quality that has never been issued on any mainstream boot. This audio circulates via custom CDR sources, typically alongside some of the audio from the 17/12/71 Rutgers gig. The audio evidence suggests a fairly empty premises for this nights show. While this is clearly a late period BSB club performance, the precise date and venue is not verified. The Student Prince is the most likely location, however it is possible this audio is from one of the Jan 1972 BSB shows at Captains Garter or the 15/04/72 Rutgers show. From an historical standpoint the key tracks are She's Leaving (later recorded as a solo demo here it's performed with the band) and the excellent Sure Can Feel The Pain. Sweet Miss Sally is sometimes titled Mistress Annie by some sources.

No set details known. ONE show, triple bill, with THE SUNDANCE BLUES BAND opening for INFERNO and headliner RUBY FALLS & THE ROCK-CITY BAND. This was the opening of a 3-night residency for Sundance Blues Band and the group's only-ever performances at this venue. The line-up of the Sundance Blues Band for this residency was Southside Johnny, Van Zandt, Tallent, Lopez and David Sancious. Springsteen, who had only just returned from a month-long stay in California, joined the band onstage for elements of this and the following two nights shows.
The above - mentioned setlist is taken from a fairly recently unearthed audience recording of very good to excellent quality that is close to soundboard standard and makes for enjoyable listening. Although the audio has now been positively linked to this residency, it is not yet established from which of the three nights it emanates. There are discernible edits between songs so this may be a compilation of material from one or more of these three nights. There doesn't sound as if there are more than a few dozen people in the audience – consistent with the group being the early evening opener for this residency.
Vini Lopez handles the lead vocal on Eric Clapton's Bottle Of Red Wine. Steve Van Zandt provides the Greg Allman-ish vocal on Willie Dixon's You Know My Love (mentioned as being inspired by Otis Rush's cover version). A highlight is the mesmerizing Why's It So Hard, written by Springsteen but sung here by Southside Johnny (there's no Bruce-led vocal rendition in circulation). David Sancious organ playing on this track is nothing short of spellbinding. Springsteen provides the lead vocal on Walter Browns immortal Confessin The Blues and John Lee Hooker's boogie romp Sweet Miss Sally. Bruce is playing rhythm guitar on all tracks. Note: this material tends to circulate under a variety of dates, sometimes with audio from other 1971 shows added on.

If you're a fan of early Springsteen, you'll love this one. This was just made available today after many, many years of only being in the hands of a select few. The sound is outstanding. Uber Series, Volume 26.

This description is from Brucebase:

14/03/72 - CHALLENGER EASTERN SURFBOARDS, HIGHLANDS, NJ

DON’T YOU WANT TO BE AN OUTLAW (6:57) / IT’S ALL OVER NOW, BABY BLUE (11:30) / WHEN YOU DANCE (13:35) / LOOK TOWARDS THE LAND (9:50) / I’VE GOT TO HAVE YOU BABY (5:39) / FUNK SONG (6:25)

The above mentioned 6 songs are taken from audio of a BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN BAND rehearsal. The band line-up is Van Zandt-Sancious-Tallent-Lopez. In addition to the 55 minutes of music there are nearly 7 minutes of fascinating between-song banter, much of it between Springsteen and Tinker West, who Bruce jokingly refers to as “Stinky”. Tinker appears to be testing some new recording equipment. The sound quality is uniformly excellent. It is evident from the discussions that the rehearsals had been going on for some time before the recording starts. It should be noted that this is not Challenger’s more famous Wanamassa location that Bruce had lived in during the 1969-70 Steel Mill era. Tinker West had relocated the factory to Highlands, NJ in mid-1971 and had then constructed a more professional rehearsal room.

The standout track here is “When You Dance”. Although rough quality live renditions exist, this is a clear rendition, with astounding Springsteen-Van Zandt dual lead guitar interplay. Noteworthy as well is “Funk Song” (also known as “Funk Says Right On”). There are no live renditions of “Funk Song” from this period circulating, however Bruce surprisingly resurrected it during a few shows early on the Born To Run Tour (see gig listings for 23/07/75, 29/07/75 and 08/08/75). In addition to the Dylan song, there is also a cover of “I’ve Got To Have You Baby”, an obscure 1956 R&B single by Jimmy Jones & The Pretenders. The complete 62 minutes of audio is currently in limited circulation. However two of these six recordings have been in wide circulation for some time. “Look Towards The Land” first surfaced on boot “BOUND FOR GLORY” (Flamingo), albeit in vastly reduced sound quality to that found on the master tape. “Don’t You Want To Be An Outlaw” (also known by the titles “Jesse James” or “Billy”) first surfaced on “DEEP DOWN IN THE VAULTS” (E Street). The sound quality on the DDITV boot is only slightly reduced from the master tape.

Welcome to the NON-Uber Series release of a great classic concert from the Bruce Springsteen Band. This is Volume 1 of what I hope will be many more to come.

In this set, all songs are in stereo, which was not available for any of the songs, including "Cherokee Queen" and "Hoochie Coochie Man" which have always been in mono. "Mama I'm Comin' Home" is certainly a highlight here-- the definitive recording of it, as well as a rockin' song. "When You Dance" is a near complete recording with only a small dropout (as the March 14 rehearsal also has), but gains points as being a much more high energy live performance than the rehearsal take, with comparable sound quality and fantastic stereo guitar play between Bruce and Steve.

This recording comes from a set of 2 cassette tapes that I acquired in 1983 from a guy at a record store in Bloomfield, NJ. The tapes somehow got lost in the shuffle, and I had actually listened to them many years ago, but had thought that I now had these recordings on CD. I recently discovered the two tapes while trying to find songs for my "20th Century Songs" set.

When I had found these tapes earlier this year, I had hoped that as the UBER series of recording was being released, that this recording would help to dislodge some of the long held recordings that the "old fans" have in their possession and are kept between a small group of collectors, for the rest of the Bruce community to never hear. Unfortunately, this plan to uncover more lost gems like this was not successful... so, this is my offering to you. As I go through the remainder of these old tapes, I hope to discover more of the same.

Here's the show that Wolfgang's has been playing that is getting raves for better sound quality. Pete recorded it and posted it to ABMS. He cautions that encoding to mp3 can reduce the quality significantly since it was already lossy. I thought about posting lossless files, but the files were still way too big. This little set was nearly 600MB, about 3 times a typical 2 disk show. So I encoded at a bit rate of 320. It still sounds pretty good.

ONE show, 8PM, double bill, with Springsteen opening for headliners BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS. Ironically Bill Graham, who'd nearly signed Bruce/Steel Mill 3 years earlier, orchestrated this concert. The above-mentioned setlist derives from an excellent quality soundboard recording that began circulating in the mid-1990's. Given Bruce's restricted performing time as the opening act, the circulating audio is likely to represent the complete performance. The circulating audio is missing the opening seconds of "Lost In The Flood".

31/05/73 - RADIO STATION WGOE-FM, RICHMOND, VA
Bruce's 2nd known acoustic radio show but this one is somewhat unique because the session took place at Richmonds Alpha Sound Studios and was broadcast live by WGOE-FM live via a remote link. Tiny WGOE didnt have the facilities to record the band so it rented the Alpha studio. In addition to WGOE-FMs DJ, the small audience heard inside the studio includes Mike Appel, Jim Cretecos, David Sancious and Albee Tellone. After the show Mike Appel took possession of the Master Tape, so none of the performance was ever re-broadcast by the station.
The above-mentioned 6-song setlist is the complete performance. No other material was recorded. Fortunately one fan had the foresight to tape the entire 35-minute (including between song chat/tuning) show from their radio, although the result was only fair sound quality. Perhaps due to its weak quality this audio, which has been around since the mid 1970’s but has always been in limited circulation, has never appeared on any mainstream bootleg. The exception was You Mean So Much To Me, which was culled from the tape and placed on the 1976 vinyl LP boot RESURRECTED in poor sound quality. This later appeared in reasonable quality on the CD RADIO WAVES (Great Dane). The entire fan-recorded version is now available on a custom CDR boot entitled STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
A professionally made, outstanding sound quality copy of the original master tape of the entire show is in ultra limited collector circulation. The recording of "You Mean So Much To Me" that appeared on the 1998 boot "DEEP DOWN IN THE VAULTS (E Street)" and in 1999 on MISSING TRACKS, VOL ONE (Thrill Hill) is, in fact, from this copy of the master tape.

ONE show, double bill, with Bruce and the boys opening for headliners CHICAGO. The 2nd of 12 consecutive shows opening for Chicago. The above-mentioned 4-song, 40-minute setlist most likely represents Bruce's complete show, bearing in mind these are four of Bruce's lengthier songs from this period and the strict time limit Bruce was under for the Chicago tour shows. This performance is currently only available via a poor quality audience recording of 35 minutes duration. The set closer, "Thundercrack", is not complete, the last several minutes are missing. From an historical standpoint the most interesting track here is "Secret To The Blues" - one of only two circulating audio performances, and the better of the two.

The above-mentioned 7-song, 45-minute setlist almost certainly represents Bruce's complete show, bearing in mind the strict time limit Bruce was under for these Chicago shows. This performance is currently only available via a poor quality audience recording of 40-minutes duration that appears to run faster than normal. The set closer, "Thundercrack", is not complete and "Secret To The Blues" and "Spirit" are marred by minor edits. A brief (but unique) rendition of "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" is found here, as well as "Phantoms" (a.k.a 'Over The Hills Of Saint George"), the work-in-progress composition that soon became "Zero & Blind Terry".

TWO shows, double bill, with Springsteen headlining and Nashville-based country singer-songwriter ALEX HARVEY on the undercard. Opening of a sellout, 3-night (6-show) residency. Springsteens second (late) show was broadcast live on WLIR-FM as part of its weekly Tuesday evening simulcast from My Father's Place. The above-mentioned setlist represents the circulating audio from this show. This very good (but not perfect) audio appears to have been taped off the airways and likely represents the entire broadcast, although the performance almost certainly included three or four additional songs that never went to air due to time limitations. Available on the CD "MY FATHER'S PLACE" (Great Dane) and more recently in even better quality on the CD "JACKSONVILLE & MY FATHER'S PLACE".

Notes:
TWO shows, with Springsteen headlining. Two or three local bands (names unknown) acting as undercards. A highly unusual show structure, as the first show took place during the day but the second show was not until later in the evening. It is likely that the 2nd show is the source of the circulating audience recording. Apparently advanced ticket sales for this off-the-beaten-track venue were poor, which necessitated Bruce plugging the Manayunk gig during the previous 3 nights at My Fathers Place. It seems to have worked, as Bruce twice thanks the crowd for traveling to (in Bruce's words) "this God-forsaken place" to support him and the band. The above-mentioned setlist is from a fairly recently surfaced audience recording of only fair sound quality, slightly better during the slower songs. On the positive side - this audio has continuity and captures the complete 11-song, 90-minute performance. There was no intermission. "You Mean So Much To Me" is the only major audio "flaw", as its final 2 minutes are missing. This show began with "Walking The Dog", which was unusual. As it is suspected he did during many of the late 1973 gigs, Al Tellone guests on baritone sax on "E Street Shuffle". "For You" is the slow version with Bruce on piano. "Thundercrack" includes an exceptionally long band-introduction segment. This is one of only two complete show audios currently available from any of the numerous gigs played during the final five months of 1973. Consequently it fills a much sought after gap in performance timeline history.

ONE show, double bill, with Springsteen opening for British blues godfather JOHN MAYALL. This was a 2-night booking for headliner Mayall, with Springsteen on the undercard the first night and Maria Muldaur on the bill the following night. Interestingly 30% of the seats for the Springsteen show remained unsold but the show with Boston-based Muldaur was a quick sellout. The above-mentioned setlist is culled from a 70-minute audience recording of the show that has only recently filtered into collecting circles and is not available on any mainstream boot. The sound is very muddy and the overall quality is only fair. Fortunately the audio has continuity and, at 70 minutes, is likely to represent the Bruce's complete performance as the opening act.

ONE show, with Springsteen the sole act on the bill. A 2hr+ performance that involved three 45-minute sets with an intermission between each. A proportion of this night's total show (audio evidence suggests it was the evening's final set) was broadcast by Georgetown University's WGTB-FM. The above-mentioned partial setlist is from the only known circulating portions of this rare broadcast. This audio emanates from a source that taped it off the airways, not the station's original tape. Consequently the sound quality is very good, but not brilliant. Albany Al Tellone guests on "E Street Shuffle". The four above-mentioned tracks can be found on the CD "PLAY THE TUBA & RUN". Note: two other tracks included on this CD are not (as claimed) from this show, or even this venue. These involve an audience recording of "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd St" (from an-as-yet-unidentified location, not Childe Harold) and an incomplete soundboard recording of "Let The Four Winds Blow" (from 06/01/74 at Joe's Place). This same audience recording of Does This Bus Stop At 82ND Street can be found on the CD THE INNER VIEW or the CD THE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN COLLECTION, VOLUME.

ONE show, double bill, with Springsteen headlining and PETER JOHNSON & THE MANIC DEPRESSIVES opening. The above-mentioned 15-song setlist represents Bruce’s complete show and can be found (correctly sequenced but with editing between some songs) on the 2CD “INTRODUCING ROSIE” (B Street Records). The source is an audience recording of fair quality that contains intermittent CB Radio interference. This final night at Joe’s was one of the lengthier single show performances up to this point and the original taper deserves credit for capturing the entire show, which consisted of two hour-long sets separated by an intermission. “Growin’ Up” is missing the opening 30 seconds and “Rosalita-Shotgun” is missing about 20 seconds mid song, seemingly the result of a tape glitch.

There are critical detailing inaccuracies in the liner notes of the “INTRODUCING ROSIE” CD. Despite what the CD claims, this is not the live debut of “Rosalita” – the song was performed throughout 1973 and two live recordings from early 1973 are in circulation. The “INTRODUCING ROSIE” CD also incorrectly lists the audio as coming from the 05/01/74 show. Yet comments made by club owner Joe Spadafora prior to “Twist And Shout” offer compelling evidence this recording is from the 06/01/74 show. In addition to the audience recording that constitutes the “INTRODUCING ROSIE” CD, there are currently soundboard recordings in circulation of three (3) tracks from this 06/01/74 show. Details are as follows:

SOUNDBOARD #1 - “Let The Four Winds Blow” - can be found (complete) on either the CDR “THE INNER VIEW” or the CD “THE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN COLLECTION, VOLUME 2”. It can also be found on the CD “PLAY THE TUBA AND RUN”, which in some cases has the complete performance but in other cases has an incomplete version with the final 4 minutes missing.

SOUNDBOARD #2 - “Zero And Blind Terry” - can be found (complete) on the 4CD set “THE GENUINE TRACKS 1972-1996”. This same soundboard of “Zero And Blind Terry” is also circulating via a 4-song cassette auctioned off by Backstreets Magazine a couple of years ago.

SOUNDBOARD #3 - “Twist And Shout” - can be found (complete) on either the CD “THE INNER VIEW” or the CD “THE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN COLLECTION, VOLUME 2”

You Mean So Much To Me
January 19, 1974
Kent State University, Kent, OH - A TOP 55 SHOW

(Actually Jan 29th 1974, Nashville)

Set List: Does This Bus Stop At 82nd Street? / Walking The Dog / Incident On 57th St / Kitty's Back / Thundercrack / You Mean So Much To Me / Growin Up / Blinded By The Light / Let The Four Winds Blow / Rosalita

This from Brucebase:

ONE show, double bill, held in the sold-out 1,600-seat Student Union Center Ballroom, with Springsteen opening for headliner BLACK OAK ARKANSAS. Springsteen opened but played about 80 minutes. However the vast majority of the fans in attendance had come to see Black Oak Arkansas - so it was a very raucous audience. THERE IS NO CIRCULATING AUDIO FROM THIS SHOW. Please note that the widely circulating soundboard audio attributed to this show (most famously found on the CD "YOU MEAN SO MUCH TO ME" (Great Dane) is actually from a small club gig in Nashville 10 days later (see BRUCEBASE listing for 29/01/74 for specific details).

29/01/74 - MUTHER'S MUSIC EMPORIUM, NASHVILLE, TN
DOES THIS BUS STOP AT 82ND ST (4:04) / WALKING THE DOG (9:12) / INCIDENT ON 52ND STREET (7:44) / KITTY'S BACK (9:53) / THUNDERCRACK (11:50) / YOU MEAN SO MUCH TO ME (start cut, 9:50) / GROWIN' UP (3:01) / BLINDED BY THE LIGHT (11:00) / LET THE FOUR WINDS BLOW (start cut, 6:42) / ROSALITA - SHOTGUN (8:54)

ONE show, double bill, with Springsteen opening for headlining Texas blues guitar legend FREDDIE KING (and his band). King was booked for a 6-night residency, however Springsteen was a special guest only for the first two nights. Bruce played before King both nights but was allowed to give a headliner-length performance. The above-mentioned 10-song setlist represents Bruce's complete performance and is from an excellent quality soundboard that is most commonly found on the widely circulating CD "YOU MEAN SO MUCH TO ME" (Great Dane). Unfortunately the folks at Great Dane incorrectly attributed this audio to a 19/01/74 show at Kent State University - and this erroneous information has widely propagated ever since. Please refer to the 19/01/74 Kent State listing for specific details about that show, which took place in a much larger venue before a substantially larger crowd.
Bruce's booking at this small, 300-seat club came about after Mike Appel became aware of a CBS Sales Convention taking place in Nashville and, additionally, that the entire CBS contingent would be staying in a hotel near this club. Appel conducted a handbill/leaflet drop to each room in the hotel, inviting nearly 200 CBS sales and marketing people to attend one the shows. However, according to Appel, nobody from CBS turned up and the club was painfully empty. The audio evidence certainly backs up Appel's recollection. There doesn't sound like there are more than 100 people in the club for Bruce's show. It is speculated this soundboard was recorded because Appel wanted to have momento material from the show to give to the CBS people he (wrongly) anticipated would show up. This was a single show consisting of two sets. There was a short intermission after "Thundercrack". The opening song of the second set, "You Mean So Much To Me", is missing its opening minute or so. Similarly "Blinded" was the final song in the 2nd set and the opening minute of the first encore, "Let The Four Winds Blow", is missing. "Rosalita" (which contains the "Shotgun" segment, as well as a very brief snippit of "High Heeled Sneakers") was the final encore

Soundcheck: THE E STREET SHUFFLE / DOES THIS BUS STOP AT 82ND ST

Early Show: NEW YORK CITY SERENADE (13:44) / SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT (5:26) / I SOLD MY HEART TO THE JUNKMAN (5:09) / DOES THIS BUS STOP AT 82ND ST (3:47) / IT'S HARD TO BE A SAINT IN THE CITY (4:01) / THE E STREET SHUFFLE (6:00) / KITTY'S BACK (13:2 / ROSALITA (9:34)

Late Show: THE E STREET SHUFFLE / NEW YORK CITY SERENADE / SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT / BORN TO RUN / 4TH OF JULY, ASBURY PARK (SANDY) / IT'S HARD TO BE A SAINT IN THE CITY / KITTY'S BACK / FOR YOU / ROSALITA / LET THE FOUR WINDS BLOW / TWIST AND SHOUT

TWO shows, double bill, with Bruce opening for headliner BONNIE RAITT. This is one of most famous Springsteen gigs yet, ironically, one of the most inaccurately reported - the key point of confusion being that there were 2 separate admission shows on the night and the long-circulating audio has been long-attributed to the wrong show. An 8-song, 70-minute, continuous segment of the early show (plus two soundcheck tracks) can be found on "ROCK AND ROLL PUNK" (E ST) or "FEEL THE SPIRIT". This is the entire early show except for one or two encore songs that followed “Rosalita”. The MC’s use of the name “The E Street Band” in his introduction is the earliest appearance of that name on any show audio or promotional material yet unearthed. The “E Street Band” name was conjured up only a few weeks earlier. The first show’s audio is a quality audience recording made by a taper who had good equipment and an ideal recording spot. Indeed, a close analysis of background conversation during the soundcheck yields an argument between someone in Springsteen's camp and the taper over this person’s right to be recording the show. This person obviously got away with it during the first show but appears not have been so fortunate for the second. An excellent show that includes a unique cover of the Dinah Washington / Etta James WWII-era blues classic "I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" (performed by Bruce in the "comedy mode" as recorded by The Starlets in 1961 - the likely inspiration).

THERE IS NO KNOWN AUDIO OF THE 2ND SHOW and precise setlist details remain problematic due to conflicting recollections. Critic Jon Landau's much-quoted "I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen" line emanates from this night. Landau only attended… and his Real Paper review only covers… the late show. However Landau’s review, in conjunction with information from other attendee recollections, provides an accurate, albeit partial, setlist for the late show, one that lasted 20-30 minutes longer than the early show. Bruce opened with the slow arrangement of "E Street Shuffle", the only known instance that Bruce has opened with this song. "For You" was also performed in its piano-solo arrangement. Bruce knew that Landau was attending the late show and he unveiled at least one new composition (possibly up to three) for Landau's ears. One of these, "Born To Run" (identified in Landau's review as the song with the “Telstar” guitar opening), is confirmed via multiple recollections, including later comments by Landau to Dave Marsh. If one or two additional “new songs” were performed during the late show (and this is where there are conflicting stories) then these would have been either “Angel Blues” (previously only played on 10/3/74) or “The Fever” (rarely played and considered new) or two songs that Bruce had written and was already fiddling with in the studio - “Jungleland” and “A Love So Fine”.

Bruce tuning and chat (1:07) / A NIGHT LIKE THIS (7:45) / DOES THIS BUS STOP AT 82ND ST (4:05) / IT’S HARD TO BE A SAINT IN THE CITY (4:29) / SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT (cut, 0:07) / FOR YOU (8:16) / LET THE FOUR WINDS BLOW - I'M READY (start cut, 9:56)

Bonus: A NIGHT LIKE THIS (remastered)

ONE show, with Springsteen & The E Street Band headlining. Beginning shows with one or two acoustic numbers had been a pretty consistent hallmark of Springsteen's concerts up to this point. However this was one of the last shows of this type, as the hiring of Mark Brickman as stage lighting director in July 1974 pretty much ended the opening acoustic solo spots in shows.

The above-mentioned partial setlist is taken from an audience recording of very weak quality that has been in limited circulation for many years. The material has yet to appear on any mainstream bootleg. The audio likely represents only about 30% of the evening’s total performance. All but a few opening seconds of "Spirit" is cut, as well as the opening minute or so of the evening finale, "Let The Four Winds Blow". Although this tape often circulates as undated, there are in fact several vital clues that almost certainly pinpoint the tape to this date and venue. Firstly, Bruce specifically mentions the name "The E Street Band" (which places the show no earlier than April 1974). Secondly, Bruce asks the audience how many of them have travelled from Detroit for this show (most respond yes - Toledo is only 70km from Detroit). Thirdly, this arrangement of "Let The Four Winds Blow - I'm Ready" was unique to the mid-1974 period and very similar to the following night's rendition in Cleveland.

From an historical standpoint the important performance is the wonderful love song “A Night Like This” (often referred to by collectors by the title “Dance On Little Angel” or Bruce’s original working title “Angel Baby”). Springsteen, identifying it as "a new song" but not mentioning the title to the crowd, performs it acoustically (with Clarence and Danny). Fortunately the audio of this song is complete and the sound quality is somewhat better on this track than the rest of the audio. Although "A Night Like This" bears no common melody or lyrics with "Sandy", both are stylistically similar and set along the summer Jersey shoreline. A studio take of this song has never surfaced but one was recorded a few months later (at 914 Sound Studios on Oct 16, 1974). Bruce later used a few tidbits of lyric from "A Night Like This" for his early 1975 composition "Lonely Night In The Park", another uncirculating recording from the BTR sessions.

TWO shows, 8:30PM and 11:30PM, double billing, with Springsteen & The E Street Band headlining and singer-songwriter JEFFREY COMANOR opening with a short set. The above-mentioned 13-song setlist encompasses the complete 2hr performance and is taken from an audience recording of reasonably good quality. This audio can be found in its entirety on the CD "NO MONEY DOWN" (Winged Wheel) and is likely to be from the 2nd show, although this is not certain. This performance includes what is currently the earliest circulating live rendition of "Born To Run".

Bruce Springsteen
“Watch The World Explode”
The Bottom Line- New York, NY
July 13, 1974

Joe Kivak Original Master Recording

Tools used: Roxio, Magix, CD Wav Editor, Switch

I just wanted to say that technically this is Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. But, for the sake of consistency,
a lot of those early shows booked Bruce Springsteen as a solo act. Somewhere in the mid-seventies the ads for the
venues began mentioning the E Street Band. At this particular time the MC introduces just Bruce Springsteen.
This is 1974 Volume 4 of Joe Kivak’s master recordings. Here is a classic Bottom Line show and for the most part the
sound is pretty damn good! THINGs TO CONSIDER WHEN LISTENING is that these early recordings were made with small cassette
recorders and the technology wasn't what it is today. However, the master recording is the source being used here and this
is a huge improvement from the early days of tape trading when you got a copy of a copy of a copy. With each copy
the quality was lost until you got a buried jumbo of what used to be a nice live show. Here you'll get a first generation
lossless master recording!

The show kicks off with a great version of “Then She Kissed Me” According to BruceBase Jungleland is cut, but here is the
complete jazzy version! Sandy however, stays true to being incomplete. Born To Run in it’s early stages has different lyrics.
Listen for the line “And then watch the world explode.” Having this early version of BTR is in itself worth having. The
classic “No Money Down” is another rare song that makes this show special. I would loved to have been at this show seeing
Bruce Springsteen in such an intimate venue. Wow, just look at the ticket scan on the artwork, it reads $5. Can you imagine
paying 5 dollars to see Bruce Springsteen? Wow, that was something!

Some tracks like New York City Serenade, has small edits. Some of that is due to the cassette having to be flipped over.
Also, Rosalita has a little more distortion. The levels on the recorder must have been accidentally turned way up.

Fanatic Records and Mr Anonymous presents another installment of the Kivak Master Series!

Enjoy!

TWO shows, 7:30PM and 10:30PM. A reader comments "This concert took place in Alexander Hall, not in McCarter Theater (see the ticket stub). The capacity of Alexander Hall was much larger than McCarter Theater. I believe McCarter was just the booking agent for this event. My freshman class orientation took place in Alexander Hall, so the capacity at that time had to be around 1100 or more" (Thanks Michael) . Bruce and the band have sole billing. Both shows were sellouts and one of the shows circulates in its entirety on an average quality audience tape. Given that there's no discernible stop-start during "Rosalita" (see fan comments below) then the complete 13-song setlist mentioned above is the late show. There's a rare blunder by the band on "Spirit In The Night", which is stopped and started again. A recording of the other show has yet to surface.

Another BRUCEBASE reader comments: "I was 16 and wanted a Bruce T-shirt but there weren't any, so my friends and I made T-shirts from the Greetings album. During 'Rosalita' I jumped on stage and gave one to Bruce. I don't think he had ever seen one before and he stopped the song and looked at it before starting again. During the break between shows we went to the band's bus and gave shirts to everyone. They loved it and always looked out for us after that".

Audience Recording - Fanatic Records Remaster

This came off the same source used on "New York Seranade" released on Wild card. The circulating recording was not
perfect, so I remixed it so that the sound is now balanced. I also EQed it to give it a little more punch. It's not
a dramatic change, but you will hear a brighter sounding show. I didn't include the bonus tracks from Wild Card since
those songs can be found on entire show from the Kivak Master Series "From The Churches To The Jails." This show at
Union College is a great 1974 performance with the slow version of "E Street Shuffle", a rare 'Spanish Harlem", an
early version of "Jungleland", the fabulous "Incident" a fun "Love So Fine" and a haunting "New York City Serenade."

this is an interview:

03/11/74 - RADIO STATION WMMR-FM, PHILADELPHIA, PA

On the eve of a bus trip to Texas Springsteen (along with Garry Tallent, new E Street Band members Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan - as well as Bruce's then-girlfriend) visits DJ Ed Sciaky for an hour of record spinning, chat and general clowning around that may be the most insightful interview Bruce has ever given. Sciaky asks Bruce some interesting questions, resulting in a substantial amount of unique historical detail. Bruce jokingly performs an on-air ad for a Santori Wines, he talks in detail about 'If I Was The Priest" and "The Fever" (Sciaky plays both songs, the former being Alan Clarke's cover version). Sciaky also got the mother of all "scoops", with a studio version of "Born To Run" receiving a world debut airing 8 months prior to its official release. Within a couple of weeks of this show Kid Leo (WMMS-FM in Cleveland), Scott Muni (WNEW-FM in New York) and Maxanne Sartori (WBCN-FM in Boston) are also sent broadcast copies of the song by Mike Appel. By early 1975 another 20 stations receive the tape, thereby creating a nightmare for CBS because many hundreds of stations can't obtain the tape. Nearly all the essential segments of this show can be found on the 2CD set "NORTHEAST ON THE DIAL" (Mystic).

A new one in the Kivak series with a review by SoulBoogieAlex

“From The Churches To The Jails”
Kivak Master Series

Cassette>CDR>CDWAV Editor/Magix/Roxio>flac

This is 1974 Volume 5 from the Kivak Master Series. Joe Kivak captured another amazing show! Incident is clipped at
the beginning, but the performance is stellar!. There is at least one edit in Kitty’s Back, probably due to the tape
being flipped over. There’s a beautifully played “Jungleland”with those bells which you can also hear at the beginning
of “Rosalita”. There’s no Born To Run, although you hear a fan requesting it. But, what we do have for this period is
the sweet cover of Dylan’s “I Want You” and the rollicking cover of Elvis Presley’s “Wear My Ring Around Your Neck”
“Quarter To Three” closes the show.

Mr Anonymous performed the cassette to CD transfer and I did the editing and mastering. After this there are 2 more
shows coming from 1974 and then we have a triple dose from the 1975 Bottom Line shows.

Mr Anonymous and Fanatic Records bring you 1974 Volume 5 of the Kivak Master Series!

Enjoy!
Rob

Although held off campus in the commercial Burlington Memorial Auditorium, this was an official school event (sponsored by the UVM After School Concert Program). A scheduling conflict had prevented the show from taking place in the school’s primary concert venue, Patrick Gymnasium. An audience tape exists - standard set for this period. Excellent Saint In The City and unusual E St Shuffle. NYC Serenade is also a good version but is spoilt by tape warble and cuts at the start.

Notes: FM Broadcast. Broadcast on WMMR radio in Philadelphia, PA, this show is perhaps one of the most legendary shows of Bruce's career. Bruce is introduced by Ed Sciaky to start the broadcast. Suki Lahav played violin and added backing vocals on several tracks during this period, most notably "Incident on 57th Street." In fact, this may be the definitive version of "Incident on 57th Street." This was probably one of the best shows of the period, certiainly one of the longest. Another note about "Incident" is that during the closing bars of the song a police siren can be heard, which is very fitting. This was the premiere of "Thunder Road," actually called "Wings For Wheels" at this time, as well as "Back In The USA" and "Mountain Of Love." Available on the CDs "The Saint, The Incident & The Main Point Shuffle (MasterPlus),""You Can Trust Your Car To The Man That Wears the Star," "Prodigal Son at the Main Point," and Crystal Cat's "Main Point Night."

Sony TC-152SD Tape Recorder
Sony ECM-99 Stereo Microphone
Maxell cassettes

Dan Lampinski recorded over 100 concerts in the Providence/Boston area, mostly between 1974 and 1978. His earliest recordings were made with an internal microphone deck, and though they are somewhat lo-fi compared to his later work, some very great moments in rock history were captured for posterity. In late 1974 he bought a Sony TC-152SD tape recorder, a Sony ECM-99 stereo microphone, and began using Maxell cassettes. He was also fortunate enough to have a friend who provided excellent taping seats for many shows, resulting in high quality recordings. In 1977, he switched over to a Nakamichi 550 tape recorder, two Nakamichi CM-300 microphones, and continued using Maxell cassettes.

He recorded many of the major 70's bands: Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kiss, Black Sabbath, The Who, Al Stewart, Alice Cooper, Jeff Beck, Bruce Springsteen, Supertramp, Jean-Luc Ponty, Moody Blues, Neil Young, The Faces, Rush, Rick Wakeman, Kansas, as well as several "under the radar" acts.

Since Dan never traded copies of his recordings, they are all essentially uncirculated. Some copies were made for friends, but these releases are the first time most of these recordings have ever seen the light of day, and are direct from his master cassettes. No EQ'ing has been done to any of the transfers. Feel free to EQ, matrix, patch, etc and re-post if you like, just give Dan credit for the original recording.

Dan was very meticulous about taking good care of his tapes and is very pleased that these recordings will now circulate among the trading community. Please honour his kindness and generosity by sharing these recordings freely.

The transfers are available as 16bit/44.1KHz flac files suitable for CD burning, and also as 24bit/96KHz flac files for those who prefer the higher resolution.

Always remember - the more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you.

Thanks to timbop711 at BTX:

another dusty ol' reel off the shelf...
got this in the mail in trade back in the 70s,
quality is quite good for this vintage, so i thought
i'd share it here while it's fresh on the hard drive.

there seems to be some ambiguity on brucebase.org regarding
the actual date of this recording, but having received
this low gen source shortly after the actual performance,
i am reasonably confident this date is accurate.

i couldn't find any record of this show on the dime bot,
and i've never heard any other versions of this recording,
so i can't offer any comparisons. any upgrades welcome,
until then, enjoy!

Audience tape, average quality. This is a healthy (and quite unique), 19-song performance and an important show in historical terms because it personifies the changing nature of the setlist that took shape in August as the Born To Run album neared its promotional and official release dates. This was one of the last performances of “New York City Serenade” for the tour. It is also the last known performance of the rare instrumental “Funk Song” (previously played on 23/07/75 and 29/07/75) and the last known performance of “A Love So Fine” until its resurrection over 20 years later (in its slight lyric/title variant) for the Tracks-Reunion Tour. This is also the earliest verified performance of “Havin’A Party”.

Notes: Broadcast on WNEW-FM in New York, NY, this show possibly represents the beginning of modern Bruce. Bruce had just completed the marathon recording sessions for Born to Run and the tour was ready to start. After a few warm-up gigs, the band hit the Big Apple and began their quest for super-stardom. Unfortunately, the hype started here as well, which culminated in the simultaneous cover stories on Newsweek and Time in October 1975. This show can be nominated as being among the best ever. The radio broadcast led to one of the first vinyl bootlegs back in 1976 called "The Great White Boss" (an allusion to the first bootleg ever, "The Great White Hope" of early Dylan demos). The show was later released on the CD "Live at The Bottom Line." In mid-2004, a fan was able to locate recording of the entire broadcast, DJ chatter and all, and "released" a more complete version called "The Way It Was." The bootleg label Godfather Records used that new complete recording as the source for their own "Punk Meets the Godfather."

from 2:43 - 4:02

Tracks 301-302 Bottom Line Soundboards, 7/14/1975

Tracks 303-304 Bottom Line 1975 Soundboards

Tracks 306-309 Bottom Line 8/15/75 from WNEW rebroadcast 7/3/1988,
recorded on a Dolby C cassette deck - these are much better quality
than those used during the main show.

Personal Notes:
Truly a labor of love...

August 15, 1975 - High Temp in NYC 85, Low 65, Wind 10mph avg, gusts to 15mph. No precipitation.

A breezy midsummer night in NYC, where all the heat was concentrated on the
corner of West 4th and Mercer in Greenwich Village, NY.

Lots of Springsteen fans (me included) couldn't get into the Bottom Line - it usually seats 400, but there was
a larger than usual number of music industry seats reserved for these 10 shows (two shows each night
August 13-17.)

WNEW-FM broadcast the early show Friday night.

I've been searching for a complete copy of this broadcast since that night, when
the mono reel to reel tapes I made had many missing pieces due to lots of different reasons.
All of the bootlegs released by the profiteers were incomplete in some way, minor or major.
Finally, in March 2004, nearly 29 years later. I found it. It is not the final word on
this show in terms of sound quality, but it is the COMPLETE broadcast, without anything missing.
Turn it on and listen to it just like you would have back in August 1975. All the station
breaks and DJ chat and such are there.

Thanks to the many people involved in this project, from the tape source, to those
who let me borrow reel to reel decks to get the dub to DAT, to others who gave advice on
mastering procedures or supplied alternate sources. Your kindness will not be forgotten

KIVAK MASTER SERIES

August 16, 1975 (The Early Show)

Audience Recording
Cassette>CD>Wav>Roxio/CD Wav Editor/Magix>flac

This is the fourth performance from the legendary Bottom Line Series in New York. It was captured during
the early show on August 16, 1975. Joe Kivak was able to document this magical moment in Bruce Springsteen’s
history, being on the heels of the release of Born To Run. These shows were among the best when a young
Bruce Springsteen & his almighty E Street Band were on the brink of conquering the world! This contains the
first live performance of "It's Gonna Work Out Fine." "Rosalita" is incomplete, as well as an edit in "E Street
Shuffle" and Kitty's Back." In spite of this not being perfect for completeness the sound is excellent for the
most part! According to BruceBase the circulating copy was muddy and less than ideal quality. If that’s the copy
you have in your collection this will certainly qualify as a major upgrade.

The Fanatic records version of this Bottomline show with review

This is the last performance from the legendary Bottom Line Series in New York. It was captured during the early show on August 17, 1975. Joe Kivak was able to document this magical moment in Bruce Springsteen’s history, being on the heels of the release of Born To Run. These shows were among the best when a young Bruce Springsteen & his almighty E Street Band were on the brink of conquering the world! For You has an edit, most likely the result of the cassette being turned over. Other than that the show is intact and the sound is decent. I hope this remastered edition is the ultimate in replacing the old existing copy that had been dubbed many times, losing much of it’s original quality.

In the upcoming week I will be uploading the August 14th and August 16th shows. Both of these along with this one from the 17th are upgrades to the existing copies.

Fanatic Records & Mr Anonymous present the Kivak Master Series!

Enjoy!

Audience Tape - Held in the school’s Hill Auditorium. Bruce’s 26th birthday – and he delivers an extra special performance, among the best on the BTR tour. Unfortunately the circulating audio doesn’t do the show justice. Tape also includes the solo Thunder Road as the opening song. Spirit In The Night starts off with "The Moon Was Yellow", Kitty's Back contains a snippet of "Nothing's Too Good For My Baby", Rosalita starts off with "Come A Little Bit Closer", Quarter To Three. is played, stopped, started up again, stopped and started up again a final time and the first known Detroit Medley contains a short piano solo by Roy during "Jenny Take A Ride" and includes Back In The USA", and does not return to Devil With The Blue Dress before it stops. Thanks to Per for the detail.

Jungleland seems to be missing on circulating tapes, but the first few bars of the track can be heard before the tape cuts to Rosalita. Post-Bomb Scare: Little Queenie / The E Street Shuffle / It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City / Sha La La / Kitty's Back / Jungleland / Rosalita / Detroit Medley / 4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) / Quarter To Three

Notes: Pre-scare: audience source. Post-scare: soundboard source. The (in)famous "Bomb Scare Show." Forty-five minutes into the concert, the building had to be cleared due to a bomb-scare. Bruce and the band evidently spent the time in the bar of the "Phhhhhhhhister" hotel continuing the "bomb" motif, if you know what I mean. Bruce came back to the stage feeling rather loose, and several times during "Little Queenie," he asked the audience, "Are ya loose?" starting a Bruce catch phrase that lasts to this day. Entire second set is from the soundboard. The second set also exists on a audience shot film. Available on the CDs "Milwaukee Bomb Scare Show" (Mistral Music) and "We Had Too Much To Drink Last Night" (BS). The audience tape of the first part of the show is rather mediocre and can be considered optional for collecting purposes.

TWO separate admission shows (8:30PM and 12:00AM), with Springsteen & The E Street Band the sole act on the bill and the building marquee proclaiming “The Homecoming”. As is so often the case with Bruce’s pre-1976 gigs, the fact that there were two shows on the same night has caused its fair share of confusion through the years. The partial setlist from the Early Show mentioned above is from post-concert reports and from a fan present who also recalls that most of the photo's in the newsweek articles came from these shows.. THERE IS NO CIRCULATION AUDIO FROM THE FIRST SHOW. The above-mentioned 15-song setlist for the Late Show is taken from a long-circulating audience recording of good (but not very good) quality and represents the complete show. An incomplete 8-song soundboard of this Late Show first surfaced on a CDR title called “LAST HOMECOMING BEFORE THE HYPE”. More recently a complete soundboard of the Late Show has been released on the CD “THE HOMECOMING” (E Street). David Sancious guests on “Carol”. The song "The Moon Was Yellow (And The Night Was Young) by Ahlert and Leslie is played as an introduction to "Spirit in the night". As he did at several shows during this part of the tour, Bruce incorporates a small snatch of Jay & The American’s hit “Come A Little Bit Closer” into the start of “Rosalita”.

“Yes, We’re Talkin To You”
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
Roxy Theater- Hollywood, CA
October 19, 1975

Original Master Audience Recording
Cassette>CDR>Magix>Roxio>flac

This is the final Roxy show in the original master series provided by Mr Anonymous. This one took place October 19th
and it was the ONLY show of the night. Previous dates had an early and late show. Born To Run and Goin Back cuts out,
but the show as a whole is worth listening to. This is a rare recording, not in wide circulation and coming from the
master tape. I did some light EQ work along with repairing space gaps and the usual beginning and end fades. New artwork
was also created. This was 1975 before Bruce Springsteen broke into the larger arena and stadium shows. This is a young
Bruce Springsteen, wild and innocent performing at a small, intimate venue! “Are You Talkin” To Me?” This seems to be
the show where Bruce first uttered those famous words. Of course it goes without saying as fanatical fans that we are,
cheering for more and never wanting Bruce to leave the stage we think to ourselves and perhaps say aloud:
“Yes, We’re Talkin’ To You, Bruce.”

Fanatic Records in association with Mr Anonymous is proud to share this recording with Bruce Springsteen fans worldwide!

Enjoy and enjoy again and again!

THUNDER ROAD (5.06)/ 10TH AVENUE FREEZE OUT (3.41)/ SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT (6.22)/ E ST SHUFFLE (17.4 / SHES THE ONE (5.27)/ BORN TO RUN (4.07)/ 4TH JULY ASBURY PARK (SANDY) (6.39)/ SAINT IN THE CITY (5.23)/ BACKSTREETS (cut at start)(5.00)/ KITTYS BACK (16.19)/ JUNGLELAND (9.12)/ ROSALITA (11.05)/ DETROIT MEDLEY (6.4 / QUARTER TO THREE (cut)(6.47)

The above-mentioned setlist is taken from a circulating audience recording of good quality and represents the complete show. After a cancellation and a couple of “almost-but-not quite” bookings in 1973, this Tampa gig turned out to be Springsteen’s first-ever performance in Florida (and Bruce can be heard acknowledging such to the audience). This show had originally been planned for the 9th but was bumped back a day, probably due to the West Coast itinerary. A sellout, with additional standing room only seats sold that day. Available on CDR "And Jack Knife Cried" See the articles here - thanks to our reporter Chris Lofback.

the bootleg I uploaded it's listed as 1975-11-09 Tampa, but it's wrong;
the first night in tampa was november 10.
It's titled ONE THOUSAND AND ONE AMERICAN NIGHTS

Audience tape and soundboard - good quality but all the inter song chat is cut so lacks atmosphere somewhat. Return of Lost In The Flood for the first time since October 1974. The song "The Moon Was Yellow (And The Night Was Young) by Ahlert and Leslie is played as an introduction to "Spirit in the night" & Rosalita includes "Come a little bit closer" (thanks Per) This show was filmed, and the Born To Run aniversary set has the complete show restored from all the reels and the soundboard. It is also known that this show was initially going to be broadcast over the radio (either live or delayed) but Mike Appel backed out at the last minute - the day of the show as he felt that Bruce's mood at the time would not lead to a particularly good show. Thanks to Pete for the updates

Complete show - mostly Soundboard but some from audience. This was not filmed and the "Sandy" cut previously listed as being from this show and shown on the BBC documentary "Glory Days" is from the show on the 18/11/75. CD releases "Shit Hot and Rockin'" & "London Calling". A recent auction piece (2002) confirms that the tapes, at least in part were made officially by Laurel Canyon with two reels surfacing containing Thunder Road, Lost In The Flood, Growin’ Up, Sha La La, Sandy, Devil with a Blue Dress On, and Walk In The Room. It is assumed that the tracks all come from this show. Another set of Record plant tape reels labelled "England" and bearing the date 02-13-76 are also known - again it is assumed these are from this show and are soundboard recordings

What can I say? Joe Kivak was there! This is the first time Bruce performs “It’s My Life” and I love it too! This is much tighter and effective than when he does it in other shows with the long, drawn out story intro. This show also features the now famous :Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” which was later officially released. There is a killer version of “Lost In the Flood” and “For You” with Bruce on piano. This is 1975 and one of the best shows from that era! The sound is pretty good too! I did some tweaking and used a noise reduction filter. This is a high energy show right down to those wonderful encores. Detroit Medley kicks major ass! Are you loose? Get ready, if you haven’t heard this show, you are in for a treat!

Fanatic Records and Mr Anonymous proudly bring you the Kivak Master Series!

Enjoy!

THUNDER ROAD (4.55) / 10TH AVENUE FREEZE OUT (3.29) / SPIRIT IN THE NIGHT (5.51) / LOST IN THE FLOOD (5.57) / SHE'S THE ONE (2.47, end cut) / BORN TO RUN / PRETTY FLAMINGO / SAINT IN THE CITY (start cut, 5.27) / BACKSTREETS (6.55) / KITTY'S BACK (16.00) / JUNGLELAND (8.34) / ROSALITA (9.42) / 4TH JULY ASBURY PARK (SANDY) (6.00) / SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN (3.58 / DETROIT MEDLEY (6.28 / FOR YOU (7.46) / QUARTER TO THREE (4.47)

This show was originally scheduled for Seneca College’s 1,000-seat Minkler Auditorium but due to ticket demand was moved to nearby University Of Toronto’s 2,000-seat Convocation Hall, then switched yet again to Seneca’s larger, 3,000-seat Field House. The various promotional memorabilia (below) tells the venue story. The above-mentioned 17-song setlist is the complete show. A reasonable quality audience recording of nearly the entire show is available on “BRING OUT THE HYPE”, a boot that gets its title from a remark heard in the crowd prior to the start of the show. The original taper did not record “Born To Run” and "Pretty Flamingo" or the end and beginning of the songs immediately before and after it. Thanks to Mauro for the AD (top right below) and the newspaper review and to Dan for the setlist correction..

notes: Soundboard and Audience tapes. Final slow version of 10th Avenue Freeze out until the Christic shows anyway. Last known Bus Stop until Red Bank '93 and last Mountain of Love. Released on CD "Teardrops On The Tower" Again, a more recent (soundboard) tape has now circulated which does not have "Sandy" and the Detroit Medley and Thunder Road are clipped at their start. The official “Wings For Wheels” documentary DVD contains great black-and-white footage of a slow “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” (filmed by early Springsteen fan Barry Rebo), which has been attributed to one of the two Tower Theater shows by an experienced video collector

One of the best Uber releases yet! The sound is off the charts brilliant. It's a Philly show. It's 1975. It has It's My Life - the first one we've had in truly great quality, the wonderful slow Tenth Avenue, and on and on for 9 songs. Grab this one!

At first blush, this tape might seem a bit ho hum as a complete
soundboard recording of the 12/31/75 show has been in circulation
for years (as are other nights from the same stand). But make no
mistake, you have never heard this before.

The previously circulating soundboard (generally attributed to be
sourced from the late, great Ed Sciaky) was recorded live to
two-track, likely on cassette or perhaps reel, and it sounds a lot
like other '75 board sources. But it turns out a multi-track
recording was also made on 12/31/75, and in early 1976 those
multi-tracks were mixed down to stereo for consideration of a live
album that never happened.

These nine songs are taken directly from the 1976 production reels
of those mixes and offer what is arguably the finest live recording
of the era. Undoubtedly, the official Hammersmith release sounds
great, but it was mixed in 2005, not 1976. If you thought
Springsteen was in your living room on the WGOE session, the entire
E Street Band is there this time.

The 7/02/75 - WIDENER COLLEGE, CHESTER, PA show video

Postby Andy I on Sun Apr 06, 2008 4:59 am

The notes on this show state:

"The detail surrounding this video production has long been a source of speculation. For many years the circulating specimens of the footage were uniformly poor in quality. However portions of the video were shown in Springsteen TV documentaries in the 1990's and the quality was significantly better than anything seen before in collecting circles. This has lent weight to a long held rumour that this footage (far from emanating from a shadowy fan) may have been shot by Widener students involved in a film making course - and that there may have been some pre-arranged conditional approval to film the concert from the Springsteen camp."

I was at this show and can comment on the video. During the show, there were two young men, probable Widener students, wandering through the audience, one lugging a gigantic video camera, and the other with the microphone. It was actually comical at times because people were tripping over the cords, and the poor guys were really struggling. Bruce clearly knew they were there, because at one point he came into the crowd and sang right into the camera. This was the early days of videotape, and the camera was one of those enormous shoulder mount models. I had totally forgotten about this until I caught the murky videos posted on Youtube. If anyone knows where some quality versions exist...
