Ahh, compilations and the valuable hard drive space one regains. Most compilations though are alphabetical in nature, and I was looking for something that still carried the flow of a typical Magic show yet offered more than the typical single night. Core songs are kept in their original order, and the fillers from each show are placed where they appeared during their night.
This is Volume: Tour Rehearsal, recorded over two nights - 9/24 and 9/25 where this Magic tour all began (9/28 in East Rutherford is not included here, but only The Ties That Bind was unique to this project and is ommitted for lack of availability). In this case, this comp did come out shorter than my Project goal of a River or Darkness length show, but this was the rehearsals, and turned out to be a looser, more relaxed set than a typical show of the first leg Magic tour. Four premiers to the Magic Tour Project appear here for those keeping track: Empty Sky, Something In The Night, Born In The USA and My Hometown.

Night’s comments:

1st show of 2 at Chicago's United Center; he's been on a bad streak in Chicago for the last few years, with sub-par performances on the Rising, D&D, and Seeger Sessions tour, so I had somewhat low expectations for the first night in Chicago. All things considered, it was a pretty good show, with some lesser-played (so far) tracks in the set such as "Adam Raised A Cain" and "Cadillac Ranch" ... although these early-tour shows are short (for Bruce), he played with high energy and whipped the crowd into a frenzy, as usual. I have high expectations for tomorrow night.

This recording was made in the back third of the floor, even with the soundboard and in line with the left speaker stack. You'll find some talkers near me for the early part of the set until I was able to navigate into an "oasis" of fans that weren't carrying on lengthy conversations with their neighbors. The early "Magic" songs (Gypsy Biker, Magic) are kind of a mess with chatty fans near me, but the quality of the recording improves significantly as the show goes on. The sound was quite good on the floor, and it's reflected on the recording.

There may be other sources that surface over time, but this is quite enjoyable as it is. This is the raw source (obviously, since the show ended 2 hours ago) -- no EQ'ing has been done. Feel free to remaster and repost as you wish, but please document what you changed.

Seats were two rows deep under the club seats overhang, off the stage left rear corner. Rear stacks were hung very high and the difference between standing and sitting/knealing somewhat lower was signifigant. This is one of two versions I have of this show...both my son and I taped. This is my son's version from the pit, 30 feet from stage, dead center. Only his second time taping and first with the Microtrack and he had a little problem with the levels early on. The volume of the first seven tracks was boosted and some fluctuations in track 1 and 7 were smoothed out as best I could. You'll likely hear a slight variance at those points. Also , mic noise at about the 2:30 mark of Dancing in The Dark.

I thought that both versions of this were very good recordings, but it seemed that what each was lacking, the other had and upon listening, I think they complement each other quite well. This version was recorded from the second row of the second level, directly to the side of the stage. Due to the banana stacks over the front and back corners of the stage pointed 45 degrees to the right and left of the taper, this recording has more indirect sound than the pit version. This version does have much less audience intrusion and *perhaps* cleaner vocals.
I'll use the same song portions for samples so you can open another window, run an A/B comparison and decide for yourself.

"The first night in Boston, "Home of the World Champion..." Bruce began, putting on a dejected face as the crowd went nuts for the Sox, "ah, you know the rest." That was his only sullen moment of the night -- it was a high-energy show start to finish, with a typically great Beantown crowd to match. "She's the One" was especially intense, Bruce channeling his energy at the end into a high toss of his guitar to tech Kevin -- right over Garry's head. Good thing Kevin's got hands, and good thing Garry's not a couple inches taller. A special moment came a few songs later, before "I'll Work For Your Love": "I'm kind of like a captain of a ship," said Bruce, "We've got a little proposal going on!" At the front of the pit was a guy with a sign that read "We met 15 years ago, I'm proposing tonight!" The lucky lady was held aloft during the song as Bruce blessed their union. A great show. A little more relaxed and less intense than the previous night,
this one was for Danny Federici who took a leave of absence following this show
to seek medical treatment for melanoma. The cold that has plagued Bruce over the last week
may have started here as his voice gives out on occasion, and his yells during Lonesome Day,
Gypsy Biker, and most noticeably during She's the One, sound like the infamous yelp by
Howard Dean. If it wasn't for Danny's departure, this would be titled Howard Dean Night. . .

This is an excellent recording with minimal crowd interference.
An upgrade from other sources IMHO.

Not split for cds, however with 80 minute discs, a natural break follows
Working on the Highway. I padded the split prior to Devil's Arcade
by a few seconds accordingly.

The project continues with the intent to save precious hard drive space. Most compilations though are alphabetical in nature, and I was looking for something that still carried the flow of a typical Magic show yet offered more than the typical single night. Core songs are kept in their original order, and the fillers from each show are placed where they appeared during their night. The outcome renders a show typical in length to the Darkness and River eras.
This is Volume: Boston, recorded over two nights - 11/18 and 11/19 (Danny's last full show of the tour - RIP Danny. ) and the end of the first American leg of the Magic Tour. This is a good one. It has a lot more audience than the CC's, but the clarity and lack of audience chatter make me wonder if those are IEM/audience mixes.

Milan is definitely an audience recording, which is probably appropriate for any show there because the audience is like another band member throughout the show. I haven't listened to much of it yet, but I've heard enough to know it's a quality recording. (from quantumrr)

Notes: While everyone had a great show tonight, and Steve was very into it, clowning around even more than usual, there was no denying this was the Big Man's night. With "She's the One," the crowd began bowing "we're not worthy!"-style during Clarence's solo, and they kept it up for his turn in "Working on the Highway" and onward. By "Dancing in the Dark," Bruce and Steve were doing it too! "Dancing" also featured Clarence's son Christopher on acoustic, and during the band intros Bruce proclaimed Clarence "The Godfather of Swedish Soul!"

"The River" came out for the second show in a row -- as in Copenhagen, this was a tight, album-style version of the song, as opposed to the drawn-out version of tours previous. It's a spare rendition, too, with no electric guitar: Bruce on just harp and vocals, Steve on acoustic, and Nils on pedal steel. Oh -- and plus the vocal stylings of about 15,000 fans.

Yes, a tremendous Swedish audience as we've come to expect, with great energy -- everyone into the show, singing along in all the right places. And not in the wrong ones -- when Bruce went to shush the crowd as usual before "Reason to Believe," they went pin-drop silent before he even finished his request. And you better believe Bruce took notice, saying in the encore, "It's an incredible audience out there tonight," and granting an enormous banner's request of "Jungleland," dedicating it to the crowd. "Jungeland" was played in place of the setlisted "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town"... but a few songs later, Bruce decided to keep the show going after "American Land" for the first time, adding "Santa" to cap the show as a bonus track (the way it should be, we think), with a merry "God jul from the E Street Band!"

Notes: It was singalong night in Antwerp, at Bruce's urging -- he seemed to figure that was the best way to keep the audience into the show. The musical high point came early on, with the tour premiere of a stupendous "Because the Night" (which belonged to Nils, thanks to his monster solo), transitioning seamlessly into "She's the One." On the latter, perhaps inspired by Nils' stunning performance, Bruce added some cool guitar flourishes of his own to the beginning. But what really got the crowd up was "Waitin' on a Sunny Day," the song's first performance since Philly, and Bruce kept that ball rolling with the singalong-friendly "The River" and "Working on the Highway." Soon he was asking them to join in on "Long Walk Home," and he added a bonus audible in the encore, "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out," complete with the I-ain't-gonna-play-it-until-you're-loud-enough extended intro.

Springsteen spoke Flemish and French, both official languages of Belgium. "The Promised Land," which has had a gospel-style outro on this leg, tonight went into a full-blown "People Get Ready" coda, with Soozie, Nils, Steve, and Clarence all joining in on vocals. The Big Man, or "Mr. Soul Santa Claus," as Bruce called him, added some particularly hearty ho-ho-hos to "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" -- said the Boss, "Don't tire yourself out, Santa!"

Taper's Comment:

I just got my brand new preamp the day before. But unfortunately my Zoom H-2 had a broken Line-In so I had to take may good old minidisc recorder with me.
While the preamp was a major improvement, I had to struggle with a reduced recording time. Furthermore I was not so familiar anymore with the NH600 (no backlight,
ahhh). As a result I did not record Radio Nowhere and Badlands. However, I took Radio Nowhere from the recently liberated ebay DVD. Hence the beginning sounds
rather poor. But from then on it is a pleasure listening. The Köln Arena is well known for its bad acoustics, but Bruce's sound engineer did very well.
I guess this is volume is the best, not only soundwise. I was an amazing night with the Köln Arena onfire. Much much better than Antwerp the day before.
I was just happy that those security guys 3 lines in front of me did not notice my activities.

This is my first upload. Hope it works OK.
Received this in a trade. Direct from mini-disc master recording.
Each disc came to me as a single file.
Tracks were then split using Switch and converted to FLAC Level 8.

I should not spend a word on this one but let me say that this
really is a terrific sound recording with great instrument
separation and cleary voice. You can hear every single instrument
at its best with a very balanced equalizing.
No audience noise but a great arena effect to fit the band performance.
Sound improves after few songs and remains one of the best recording
I've heard from this tour.
Enjoy it!

Here's how it works - people upload shows on the request thread at BTX. When I get time I copy everything over to this site. At the moment I have a very busy job and a 4 month old baby so the updates haven't been quite as regular as before.

Now the tour is back on, I'll try to keep up with the updates. If not you can just follow the BTX request thread and you'll find anything that gets posted over there first.

Does anyone have a link to the BTX site?
