Comments:
A memorable St. Patrick's Day in Milwaukee; Bruce played to a mostly full house and put on a great performance. Plenty of surprises in the set, including "Streets of Fire" (which I think hadn't been performed since the 1999-2000 tour) and a show-opening "No Surrender." Richard Davis, a session musician Bruce had recorded with in the '70s, was brought on to play upright bass on "Meeting Across The River" (for which he'd originally contributed to the BTR recording) in the most emotional moment of the show, followed by a fiery "Jungleland" that brought the house down. "Cadillac Ranch" got its regular Wisconsin appearance; it seems E Street hardly ever plays that song anywhere BUT Wisconsin anymore. Fun, loose, long performance.
This is not my finest recording, but I figured I would post it in the absence of other recordings surfacing to this point. I was 10 rows up beside the stage; apparently I had bought a ticket in the "talking section." The women next to me barely knew who Bruce was and talked loudly to each other literally without interruption for 2 1/2 hours. Being a male, I can't imagine what I could talk about for 150 minutes without stopping, but apparently it was important enough that they had to carry on an in-depth conversation 30 feet from Bruce for the whole night. Miraculously, they barely appear on the recording, but in my efforts to redirect my mikes away from them I caught the full force of a "clapper" for several songs of the show.
In a nutshell, there's too much crowd noise and I'm too close to the PA to catch the full vocals -- they're a little low in the mix. I tried to address the latter with some basic EQ'ing, but there wasn't much I could do about the former. This is a decent recording and worth having until a better source shows up, but hopefully there *will* be a better source that turns up before long.

Notes:
I'm not exactly a Springsteen fan myself, but my friend needed someone to go with her and since concerts are kinda my thing, I obliged. I decided to record this as I know many will enjoy it. Please pardon my friend yelling at me, in the recording, she just doesn't understand. lol.
I started off with the STC-9000 set to 0 dB gain, but after the first song felt the sound wasn't that loud so decided to crank it to 10 dB. Compensated for this by boosting the first track a little extra in Audacity..

Neo Remaster - "Incident in Columbus"
This is a remaster of the great recording originally made by Travitz and posted
the day after the show. I have made the following modifications to the original
recording:
A) Compensated for some fast level changes at the beginning (during caliope intro)
B) Added fade-outs and fade-ins to both CDs
C) Did some minor re-EQ to knock the low bass down a bit
D) Added some compression to raise the amplitude of the soft parts and reduce
dynamic range a bit (for better listening in cars, etc.)
E) Re-tracked the CDs slightly
Samples and artwork are included.

"And the show goes on. Eight days after their last performance, five days after the passing of Danny Federici, and just one day after the funeral service,
Bruce and the E Street Band took the stage in Tampa. There was no question that they'd be honoring Danny's memory tonight.
The real question might have been, how would they do it?
The answer: by acknowledging the magnitude of the loss, by embracing Danny's contributions to the band,
by tapping a deep well of emotion and playing their hearts out all night.
The night began with a film montage. Bruce and the E Streeters came out and turned to watch the screen behind Max's drums,
standing stone-still as archival footage and stills from Danny's life (remember that long, flowing hair?) played out across it, set to "Blood Brothers."
Patti was there, too, for her first show of 2008 -- the E Street Band out in full force. A spotlight, meanwhile,
lit up Danny's organ riser (where his accordion was propped, too), and remained shining on the empty station for the band's first song of the night,
"Backstreets." Bruce gave a raw and emotional howl at the end, and as he pointed to the organ, the light faded.
After the poignant opening, Charlie Giordano came out to join the band from "Radio Nowhere" on,
remaining as subtle and discreet as you could possibly imagine on this night, while doing his job and doing it well.
But emotional -- even emotionally draining -- as it was, it wasn't a somber occasion.
This was an intense performance, with each member of the band electrified.
Solos -- Max on "Badlands," Steve on "Gypsy Biker," Roy on "Racing in the Street" (yes, they did "Racing,")
Nils on "Because the Night" -- burned even brighter.
And Bruce himself put it all out there, starting with a thematic setlist clearly tailored to recall Federici's place in this band of brothers
and the impact of his musicianship on Springsteen's work.
After "Gypsy Biker," Charlie moved over to the piano as Roy strapped on the accordion for "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)."
"We want to thank you for all your prayers and condolences," Springseen told the crowd. "Roy, you better get this right -- somebody's watching."
Soozie and Patti offered beautiful harmonies, and it was a magical performance of "Sandy." Bruce wiped away tears and gave Roy a kiss.
"One more fairy tale," he said, leading the band into "Growin' Up." That song recalled the old days in more ways than one,
as Bruce began a little story during the instrumental break wit
"There we were, on the highest hill in Flemington, New Jersey... It was a sunny, hot summer morning... and the preacher said...
'I took month-long vacations in the stratosphere...'"
"Thank you so much for coming out tonight and helping us through," Bruce said as they came out for the encore.
And he wasn't just talkin': the crowd -- unusually full for a postponed show -- was there at every turn,
giving the energy back on sing-alongs like "Badlands," "Out in the Street," and "Waitin' on a Sunny Day." For the first encore song,
Bruce pulled out the premiere of an old gospel standby, "I'll Fly Away." This one went out to Danny,
of course, and everyone came down front -- even Max, on tambourine -- for a rousing rendition with a Seeger Sessions feel.
Bruce called it "New Jersey bluegrass."
A few songs later, "Spirit in the Night" was setlisted, but Bruce chose to replace it with one of the only unplanned songs of the night
-- "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out." It was a fine choice, recalling the formation of the legendary band that Danny Federici was a part of from the beginning,
its lyrics equal parts exasperation, determination, and celebration. Teardrops on the city, yes... and tonight they busted it in half for Danny.

Description:
This historic Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band show features the Darkness on the Edge of Town and Born To Run albums in their entirety, plus encores. The band has never performed these albums in their entirety before.
The Count Basie Theatre holds about 1500 and this was the band's first performance in a venue this small in 30 years.
The show was a benefit to raise money to renovate the historic Count Basie Theatre; it raised $3 million, with auction ticket prices ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 per seat.
The recording sounds quite good for an audience recording from the back of the orchestra. There is some crowd clapping, yelling, singing along, and a little talking, but it's not too obnoxious. The band drowns out the audience during most songs. I'd rate it 8.5/10.
