For Letterman to let a musical guest go on for an extra song on the air is unusal, but on this most unusual of nights the studio audience was treated to no less than four songs from the Boss. Some were more complete than others. The first, "Money (That's What I want)" was just a snippet. As Springsteen and the E Streeters came out during a commercial break, Paul Schaffer and his CBS Orchestra were going through the Beatles song; in one of the several highlights of the taping that no one at home got to see, Springsteen stepped to the microphone to sing, and the Big Man joined in on sax.
That lasted under a minute, though, and when the break was over Letterman officially introduced Bruce and the band. "Murder Inc" was first of the broadcast songs, and quite simply, it rocked. Most people's first real glimpse of Bruce live with reunited E Street Band made it clear once again what a difference this band makes, with Clarence's awe-inspiring presence, the tightness of the rhythm section, and Mighty Max in particular slamming the song to a close. Shaffer then counted off into "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out," and Bruce and the band jumped at the chance, but out in TV-land we were quickly shuttled off to commercials. When the show returned Bruce and the band were still going with "Tenth Avenue," stopping only reluctantly after "the Big Man joined the band".
The Letterman show was a potent, even surprising reminder of just how powerful and important the Big Man's presence is onstage with Bruce. Not to mention his horn-playing, which was integral part of the next song (live premiere), "Secret Garden." Due to no lack of effort on Springsteen's part - Bruce and the band were clearly giving their all - this song seemed to lack something in its live performance. But when Clarence came in with his ethereal solo to close the song and the show, it felt like everything finally came together.
