On his tours to support his first four albums, Bruce was often known to break into what have been called "shaggy dog stories" in the middle of songs, particularly those like "Growin' Up." For instance, some of the more memorable stories include "I Was a Teenage Werewolf," the night Clarence told him to go up the hill to talk with God ("and don't say nothing 'bout that god damned guitar"), the night he first met Clarence walkin' down the boardwalk, the intro to Pretty Flamingo, etc.
(He still does this time to time, but now his catalogue of songs is so long that he has to work hard to fit even a fraction of them in! Go Bruce, go!)
I have some of these in the midst of various concerts from the 70's and 80's. But I was wondering if anyone on this BBS has compiled Bruce's story telling into one or two downloads. Granted, he may use the same song as the jumping off point for different stories, whether it was "Little Melvin and the Invaders, trying to get back to the New Jersey turnpike" or "how his mother told him he should be an author, and get something for himself" or "how the priest told him he needed to talk to God about his future..", but whatever the song, these were really good stories.
So... does anyone have a Great Compilation of Bruce Stories??? Like the time he drove his car through Earl Sheib, and left the windows down, so Earl did the interior too?
Lemme know. Save myself a lot of cutting and pasting, and maybe I'll hear some new ones. Like the time Steven went to the track...or that Clarence wants to open a combination laundromat and pizza parlor in downtown Asbury Park.
Thanks. And thanks, Bruce (and the Band), for all these years of fun, fun, fun.
