Magic Tour Project: Tour Rehearsal
9/24 and 9/25/2007 Convention Center, Asbury Park, NJ
Ahh, compilations and the valuable hard drive space one regains. Most compilations though are alphabetical in nature, and I was looking for something that still carried the flow of a typical Magic show yet offered more than the typical single night. Core songs are kept in their original order, and the fillers from each show are placed where they appeared during their night.
This is Volume: Tour Rehearsal, recorded over two nights - 9/24 and 9/25 where this Magic tour all began (9/28 in East Rutherford is not included here, but only The Ties That Bind was unique to this project and is ommitted for lack of availability). In this case, this comp did come out shorter than my Project goal of a River or Darkness length show, but this was the rehearsals, and turned out to be a looser, more relaxed set than a typical show of the first leg Magic tour. Four premiers to the Magic Tour Project appear here for those keeping track: Empty Sky, Something In The Night, Born In The USA and My Hometown.

"Only three shows into the tour, and Bruce and the band have found that next level. Chalk it up to the locale, to it being the second show of a stand, to their determination to rise up to a challenge, whatever -- Philly 2 was an electric show. That was signified right out of the the gate with "Night," a real shot in the arm as the opener, bumping "Radio Nowhere" to the second slot for the first time. In all there were seven songs not played the previous night, most of which served to elevate this very high-energy show.
"Town Called Heartbreak" was suddenly transformed, with a full-band treatment and a particularly happening organ intro. That song went right into a true Philly special, "Incident on 57th Street" -- which they nailed. Odds would have seemed against such a thing this early in a tour.... but hey, it's Magic. (And "incidentally," that'll teach anyone who decided to hit the bathroom during the Patti song.) Next up was the wildest one of the night, a completely spontaneous "Cadillac Ranch." A true audible, Bruce impulsively called for solos left and right, catching Steve in particular off guard, and pushing Soozie to center stage to countrify the song a bit. In the encore, "Dancing in the Dark" was also ramshackle but right, working really, really well as a replacement for "Sunny Day."
For all our talk about rehearsals honing the new songs, chops, transitions, pacing, yadda yadda yadda... all those things have to be there, sure, that's the foundation (and you don't think "Incident" sounds that good without practice, right?), but this one demonstrated that what really makes for a powerful show is spontaneity, energy, and a venture or two off the map. Keep keepin' 'em on their toes, Bruce. If Friday was a bit wobbly, they fixed all those wheels for tonight, clearly the best Magic show yet." - backstreets

Night’s comments:
1st show of 2 at Chicago's United Center; he's been on a bad streak in Chicago for the last few years, with sub-par performances on the Rising, D&D, and Seeger Sessions tour, so I had somewhat low expectations for the first night in Chicago. All things considered, it was a pretty good show, with some lesser-played (so far) tracks in the set such as "Adam Raised A Cain" and "Cadillac Ranch" ... although these early-tour shows are short (for Bruce), he played with high energy and whipped the crowd into a frenzy, as usual. I have high expectations for tomorrow night.
This recording was made in the back third of the floor, even with the soundboard and in line with the left speaker stack. You'll find some talkers near me for the early part of the set until I was able to navigate into an "oasis" of fans that weren't carrying on lengthy conversations with their neighbors. The early "Magic" songs (Gypsy Biker, Magic) are kind of a mess with chatty fans near me, but the quality of the recording improves significantly as the show goes on. The sound was quite good on the floor, and it's reflected on the recording.

Ademotte’s comments:
2nd show at Chicago's United Center; as far as I'm concerned, this one redeemed Bruce for the lackluster D&D and Rising shows he's done in Chicago in recent years. This was probably the shortest show of the tour so far (roughly 120 minutes), but packed with audibles and rarities throughout that he hasn't played in years. The energy was noticeably much higher tonight, with Bruce bolstering the midsection of the show with the rarity "Tunnel of Love" (how many times has he played this since 1988? Two?), "Spirit In The Night," and "Darlington County." Nobody in even the highest reaches of the United Center was still seated by the time the show hit the 70-minute mark.
During the encore, Bruce acknowledged a 12-year-old boy in the front row who had been holding a sign for "Thunder Road" throughout the show. After bantering with the kid for a minute, Bruce switched guitars and said, "This is a test. We're going to do a song we haven't played in about five years. But before that, we'd played it for 25 years straight, so it kind of evened out." The camera remained focused on the boy (who was overjoyed) on and off throughout the song; it was a great moment.
I may not be qualified to say this, having only seen the Chicago shows, but it's hard to imagine that this *wasn't* one of the best of the tour so far.
I've only spent a few minutes with the recording, but it appears to be somewhat better than the first night. I was exactly halfway back on the floor in line with the left stack; a perfect taping location although I had to put up with some talkers (fewer than I did on the first night) around me. I suspect they're noticeable on the quieter "Magic" songs, but in my spot-checking I didn't hear any crowd noise that intruded too much on the music.
This tour is going to be *great* by the time Bruce hits the stadiums next summer.

Rear stacks were hung very high and the difference between standing and sitting/knealing somewhat lower was signifigant. Also , mic noise at about the 2:30 mark of Dancing in The Dark.

This version was recorded from the second row of the second level, directly to the side of the stage. Due to the banana stacks over the front and back corners of the stage pointed 45 degrees to the right and left of the taper, this recording has more indirect sound than the pit version. This version does have much less audience intrusion and *perhaps* cleaner vocals.
I'll use the same song portions for samples so you can open another window, run an A/B comparison and decide for yourself.

"The first night in Boston, "Home of the World Champion..." Bruce began, putting on a dejected face as the crowd went nuts for the Sox, "ah, you know the rest." That was his only sullen moment of the night -- it was a high-energy show start to finish, with a typically great Beantown crowd to match. "She's the One" was especially intense, Bruce channeling his energy at the end into a high toss of his guitar to tech Kevin -- right over Garry's head. Good thing Kevin's got hands, and good thing Garry's not a couple inches taller. A special moment came a few songs later, before "I'll Work For Your Love": "I'm kind of like a captain of a ship," said Bruce, "We've got a little proposal going on!" At the front of the pit was a guy with a sign that read "We met 15 years ago, I'm proposing tonight!" The lucky lady was held aloft during the song as Bruce blessed their union. "Alright, kids, remember... you gotta work, work!" (And to stress that point, he went into "Tunnel of Love" next.) He also added, "Next time try a candlelight dinner, bottle of wine, the usual." Clarence was spot-on all night, especially on... wait for it... yep, "Jungleland," in the encore. The Big Man nailed his spotlight moment. The only real curveball in the set, "Jungleland" went out to Bruce's friend Bob Coles, as well as a whole host of "mamas" in the crowd, including Max's mom and George Travis's too, who's 93! Also in the house, hometown fave -- and frequent Springsteen guest, though not tonight -- Peter Wolf. Maybe tomorrow?" -backstreets.com

A great show. A little more relaxed and less intense than the previous night,
this one was for Danny Federici who took a leave of absence following this show
to seek medical treatment for melanoma. The cold that has plagued Bruce over the last week
may have started here as his voice gives out on occasion, and his yells during Lonesome Day,
Gypsy Biker, and most noticeably during She's the One, sound like the infamous yelp by
Howard Dean. If it wasn't for Danny's departure, this would be titled Howard Dean Night. . .
This is an excellent recording with minimal crowd interference.
An upgrade from other sources IMHO.
Not split for cds, however with 80 minute discs, a natural break follows
Working on the Highway. I padded the split prior to Devil's Arcade
by a few seconds accordingly.

Magic Tour Project: Boston
11/18 and 11/19 2007 TD BankNorth Garden, Boston, MA.
The project continues with the intent to save precious hard drive space. Most compilations though are alphabetical in nature, and I was looking for something that still carried the flow of a typical Magic show yet offered more than the typical single night. Core songs are kept in their original order, and the fillers from each show are placed where they appeared during their night. The outcome renders a show typical in length to the Darkness and River eras.
This is Volume: Boston, recorded over two nights - 11/18 and 11/19 (Danny's last full show of the tour - RIP Danny. ) and the end of the first American leg of the Magic Tour. This compilation produces ten premiers to the Magic Project series: Jackson Cage, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, This Hard Land, I'll Work For Your Love, Tunnel Of Love, 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy), The E Street Shuffle, Working On The Highway, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out and Kitty's Back.
